Welcome to the Wever Community Hub

The Wever Community Hub provides a welcoming and supportive gathering space for all Wever residents and serves as an access point for a wide range of community programs, activities, events and services. This Centre of Excellence is formed by Norman ‘Pinky’ Lewis Recreation Centre, Mission Services and nearby Cathy Wever Elementary School. The Hub is a nerve-centre that connects Wever children, youth and families with each other and with the City community around them.

We work with public institutions and community partners to ensure Wever children, teens and families have barrier-free access to quality community recreation programming that promote well being and the development of skills that increase chances of success in school and work. We actively engage community residents and provide unconditional support as they overcome significant obstacles to participation in healthy community life.

Sanford Avenue School Demolition

The Wever Hub comments on the Sanford Avenue School Demolition:

The Wever Hub does not have an opinion on the demolition of this property.

Over the past 6 plus years, we have met with many stakeholders and listened, discussed and worked to create a vision.

The vision is that we would like to have additional green space to include soccer and basketball areas, and outdoor classroom and a peaceful seating and garden area. This concept would provide a great space for children, families and seniors in the greater community.

In addition the lack of a gym located at Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre has limited the ability to offer free after school program to children in the neighbourhood. Additional space in the recreation centre could provide opportunities for greater program use for seniors, families and children.

The Wever Community Hub unlike most Community Hubs is not the local neighbourhood association. The Wever Hub focuses on “leveling the playing field” for at risk Wever children and youth. We work to mobilize Hamilton Community assets to reduce barriers to participation and provide equal opportunity, so that disadvantaged children and their families have access to mainstream support networks crucial to healthy growth and development. We strive to provide Wever children with the foundation for a brighter future by equipping them with the tools to succeed in school, in work and in life.

At no time have we or do we represent the entire community and believe that the Gibson Landsdale Neighbourhood Association is the avenue to work towards such large community issues. We have been supportive of the neighbourhood association and have provided an avenue to share and discuss issues at the Hub meetings.

We have asked that all stakeholders attend a special Hub Information meeting on Tuesday December 4th at 6pm at Cathy Wever School. The meeting will be an opportunity to clarify the role of the Hub, the history of the issue and look at options moving forward.
